What is NAWES?
NAWES is a network of women
scientists of African origin who live and work in Sweden/Europe.
NAWES works to support and
encourage female scientists of African origin, who live and work in
Sweden or other European countries, to be visible and participate in
the academic and public spheres in Sweden, Europe and Africa. The
overarching task of NAWES is to work for sustainable, equal
development in Africa as well as in the Diaspora.
The aims of the NAWES network are to:
1. Provide a forum
for African-European female scientists where:
- Members support each other by sharing
experiences, knowledge and information
- Act as mentors for younger
people with African background, who wish to pursue academic
careers in Sweden or Europe
- Create opinion to counter injustice and
prejudice against women of African origin, that limits full
participation, influence and professional development in science,
academia and mentorship
2. Act as a scientific / knowledge resource
base for research and policy concerning Africa or individuals of
African origin in the Diaspora, for the diplomatic corps,
politicians, policy and decision makers and development agencies
3. Contribute to and influence discussions
with the African Diplomatic corps or decision makers in Sweden
/Europe aimed at advancing action on research and development
concerning Africa and the African Diaspora
4. Document and publish current issues and new
relevant research
5. Support members to initiate and actively
participate in research and development issues that concern
individuals of African origin in Sweden, Europe and Africa.
